TMW 2021: Funk Embassy Stage

On the first night of TMW at the brand spanking new venue D3, Estonian Funk Embassy will present ambassadors of afro beats from home and away! The Funk Embassy Stage takes place on Thursday, the 30th of September.

The Coco’nuts consists of six musicians and creative souls united by friendship and music since 2012. Their songs are characterized by strong, dark and powerful lead vocals, bold improvisation, ever-changing melodies and plenty of instruments. They describe themselves as follows: “We’re like Latvian rasols — a sausage-potato salad that fills you up and has a bit of everything in it: alternative jazz, indie, blues rock and funk.”

With over a decade of jazz vocalist experience under her belt, ANETT has evolved into one of the most distinctive artists in Estonian contemporary soul. While staying true to her rather personal approach to songwriting, she has managed to cross over to popular music, winning the hearts and minds of both music lovers and critics. Her self-released 2020 debut album Morning After channels ANETT’s personal thoughts and breezy songwriting and sonics informed by contemporary soul, RnB and FM-pop.

Afrodelic is a spellbinding mix of African poetry and music with modern sounds and electronic rhythms. It’s a project by the Lithuanian-Malian guitarist and producer Victor Diawaras, that he has dedicated to his father, whose poems will also feature on the artists’ upcoming album.

Savana Funk – Aldo from Italy, Blake from the UK and Youssef from Morocco first met 6 years ago in Bologna, Italy. It quickly became evident that they shared a special bond, a deeper emotional and musical connection. Savana Funk’s repertoire is an original mixture of African music, funk, blues, psychedelic rock and jazz.

If you missed out on Rita Ray‘s performance last year, we truly feel for you. Her power cut defying impromptu acapella performance went down in the history of the festival, being picked as one of the top moments of TMW 2020 by JAZZTHETIK Magazine. Rita Ray is Estonia’s first real blue-eyed soul and classic R&B diva who writes her lyrics, composes, sings, plays the piano and does all the arrangements almost by herself. However, the 5-piece band around the small-town girl consists of the best local musicians. Miss Ray’s shows are yet to leave a heart unmelted and she’ll have you in her palm with her tender melodies, irony-filled lyrics, catchy riffs and disco-stomps.

Raw street funk on one side, with sweet soul on the other — Lexsoul Dancemachine is a 6-man groove band known for tearing venues apart with their stage presence. Active since 2013, the aim of the machine is to hypnotize music lovers with thumping bass lines, syncopated rhythms, catchy riffs and soulful vocals.
